DESCRIPTION

A comprehensive rework of the Wizard (Sha'ir) subclass for 4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons. The download includes:

  •  A PDF of the subclass, with two new features and reworks to existing features
  • A plain text version of all content
  • Patch notes listing all changes, including the class-exclusive ability to re-summon familiars as a minor action
  • A new condition, "Escalating Damage"
  • Reworks to the 4 existing Sha'ir exclusive familiars
  • Four new Sha'ir exclusive familiars, "Orb of the Scholar", "Toxic Cloud", "Death Omen", and "Oathbinder Mirage".
  • Four new Sha'ir exclusive feats, "Multiplied Element", "Potent Element", "Pure Element", and "True Element".

MOTIVATION

Sha'ir is an underwhelming Wizard subclass with no clear direction. Aside from the unique familiar choices, it has nothing substantial to offer a would-be Wizard-enjoyer. Consequently, some neat familiars are locked behind a class that has very limited appeal.

To fix this, I've taken Sha'ir in its own direction. The goal is to make it both "the Wizard with a cool pet" and a strong option for blaster Wizards. Currently, the Pyromancer Wizard is the premier damage-dealing Wizard, but this is limiting for players who enjoy using a wider variety of elements and powers. This rework is not intended to obsolete Pyromancer Wizards, only to function as an approximate sidegrade to it, trading some damage for more access to control and interesting, unique effects.

Turning Sha'ir into a Sorcerer-adjacent secondary-Striker may seem like an odd direction at first, but I believe this is because Sha'ir was previously a very directionless subclass. In effect, any direction would have seemed strange, and so I chose a direction I found interesting. Even if it is not the direction you would have expected for such a rework, I hope that you can find value in the implementation regardless. I'm open to suggestions for other potential directions, and wouldn't be opposed to reworking another Wizard subclass (or reworking this one again) in the future.
